What is EPCIS?

EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services) is a global standard for tracking and tracing products within a supply chain. It provides a common, interoperable framework for capturing, sharing, and accessing information about the movement and status of products. By assigning a unique identifier (serial number) to each item, EPCIS allows for real-time monitoring of its location and status, improving supply chain visibility and enhancing product safety.

What Data is in EPCIS?

Item Identification

Unique identifier for each product unit, such as serial number, GTIN, and EPC.

Event Data (T3)

Information about the transaction, movement, or status of the product, such as transaction history, transaction information, and transaction statement.

Location Data

EPCIS includes information about the location of the product, such as facility, warehouse, or retail.

Time Data

Information about when a product was received, shipped, or moved.

Business Data

Information about the business transaction associated with the product, such as the parties involved, quantity of product, and terms of the transaction.

EPCIS Aggregation

EPCIS aggregation refers to the process of grouping multiple items together into a single unit for tracking and tracing purposes.

In an EPCIS system, aggregation is accomplished by assigning a unique identifier (such as a serial number or barcode) to each group of items and tracking that identifier instead of tracking each individual item. This allows for more efficient monitoring of the group as a whole, while still providing detailed information about the individual items when necessary.

EPCIS aggregation helps improve supply chain visibility, enhance product safety, and ensure compliance with regulations such as DSCSA.

Unit Serialization

Each saleable unit is assigned a unique identifier.

Carton Serialization

Units packed into cartons. Each carton is assigned a unique identifier and each unit (child) is associated with the carton (parent)

Case Serialization

Units packed into cases. Each case is assigned a unique identifier, and each unit (child) is associated with the case (parent).

Pallet Serialization

Cases packed onto pallets. Each pallet is assigned a unique identifier, and each case (child) is associated with the pallet (parent).
